On March 14th, 2016 White Wilderness Heli Skiing shredded our last deep powder turns for the season - our first season in this bold new adventure in British Columbia’s North-central coast. Our inaugural year was full of firsts: first guests, first meals, first descents, first high-fives and first nights gazing at the stars from our 10-person jacuzzi...
“A brand new heli skiing operation with an old soul” - Krista Crabtree, ski clinic leader, freelance writer and ski test director for OnTheSnow
By all accounts, White Wilderness Heli Skiing belongs on the list of world-class helicopter skiing operations. Guests loved the nuanced and varied terrain. They felt at home in what many described as the best accommodations they had seen in the heli skiing world. An ovation became a regular occurrence on the final night at the lodge in appreciation of Chef Klaus’s unparalleled cuisine. After 18 years in this business, I have never experienced the kind of consistently outstanding food that Klaus and Emmy delivered day after day, night after night.
Feedback from our guests this season spoke of many things, not the least of which was the staff at the lodge, the team at WWHS. This winter was about the people: both guests and staff, being a part of something new. And something spectacular.
Of course, there was also mention of how much our guests loved complimentary massage at the end of a long day of bottomless powder skiing. And of having a great wine paired with dinner. And of being greeted with a roaring wood fire in the guest cabins before tucking in for the night.
…so how’s the skiing?
Guides, guests, photographers and professional ski athletes all agree. We’ve got the skiing. And lots of it. Whether it’s putting together a tight little circuit of steeper chutes and the hanging bowls of the Chimdemash drainage: “Super Like”, “Dirty Laundry”, “Tinderbell” and “Happy Ending”. Or exploring some of the higher and wide open glaciated terrain of the Sir Robert zone: “Soul”, “Heli Life”, “Biggus” and “Bob’s Your Uncle”. Or skiing the peak to creek dream line “Better Than” in the far NW corner of the Knauss zone. It’s official. There’s no shortage of amazing skiing and snowboarding terrain up here.
This summer will be a busy one for us. We’re in the process of breaking ground on a new custom-built log building that will be the new home for our spa, boot room, exercise room and yoga studio. We’ve recently torn out all of the guest cabin bathrooms and are upgrading them with beautiful heated custom tiled floors and showers.
We’ll also be doing some glading work this fall to improve and expand upon our poor weather skiing and will be adding an explosives avalanche control program to our quiver so that we can increase the number of runs available to us during periods of increased avalanche hazard.
How are bookings looking next year? We’re extremely happy to say that we’re already seeing extremely strong bookings for 2016/17: full up form January 20th through March 10th. There’s still room on either side of those dates though – email booking@WWHeliski.com for more info.
...So when should you come skiing with us?
People always ask me: “when is the best week to come heli skiing?”. The absolute honest answer is that there is no “best” week. 20 years ago, when our winters tended to follow a more established pattern or cadence, one could say that mid-January through mid-March was the time to come. But climate change has thrown those patterns out the window. Each and every week has the potential to be the best of the season, whether it’s during the colder snowy early season weeks of December or after a spring storm that blankets the peaks with 30cm of mid-winter fluff at the end of March. Really. Come when it suits you best, because chances are that you’ll do great at any point in our season.
Feel free to get in touch directly if you would like to discuss possibilities with us next year. More to come…
And all the best from your team at White Wilderness Heli Skiing!
Yours in Powder,
Ken Bibby
Operations Manager
